I’m rather bored right now, and nothing interesting seems to be happening. So, I ask of you Oppo, what are your daily time wasters? Basically, what (safe for work) websites do you browse usually? I’ve exhausted my usual round of here and the front page, MSN (hey, it isn’t blocked) and a couple of sports message boards. But that’s it. Anyone got any good websites they like to go to that kills time?

Uh... this one. Also Live And Let Diecast. Then NPR, Speedhunters, Craigslist/SearchTempest, Petrolicious, the HAMB, and Mulsanne’s Corner.

This is a good one, but I won't go near Reddit while at work.

Fair enough. Now that I think about it, there are occasional NSFW posts in that sub (dead animals or what’s left of them).

Deadspin; ya’ll might hate it, but I think it’s the funniest and best written of all the kinja blog. The commentors on there are gold.

BloombergView for news editorials. I have an engineering background, but I find finance to be incredibly interesting for some reason.

Wikipedia for random history stuff. It’s fun to dive down the rabbit hole, working your way through connected wikis.

Yeah, Deadspin is on my list too. Although lately a lot of the stories on Deadspin (and only Deadspin) have been crashing my browser tab.

And I'm a big fan of falling down the Wikipedia rabbit hole. I do that quite often myself.

I have the same routine as you, but when that gets old I start researching upgrade options (including the correct parts choice) via forum discussions and build threads. I bookmark the good ones and revisit them occasionally. I follow tangents for context, read LS swap threads to play devil’s advocate / torture myself.

I keep it all in a Google spreadsheet of everything I need to do to “finish” my car (I have an E36 M3 sedan in great shape that I’m slowly perfecting with all the right bolt-ons).

When a component fails, I do the upgrade (and let’s be honest - at 207k miles things wear out fairly routinely).

Things go smoothly when I’ve already done all the research before hand, even if it was months ago. A quick refresh and we’re good to go.

When I did my clutch in April I completely refreshed the transmission shift pins / bushings. It was fairly involved, but previous meticulous research meant it was very straight forward and went smoothly. SSK and a LTW flywheel/clutch and the thing is better than new.

The research is a great use for what otherwise would be wasted time.

Non-car, non-design related: Metafilter.com, Kottke.org. Both great for ongoingly-updated interestingness.

Oppo, quite honestly. I know many of the vets are grouchy about the disallowing of NSFW materials on Oppo, but it means that I can read Oppo while I am decompressing (or in a pointless meeting) and not get red flagged by the IT department.
